Data input for the MusicWiki is accomplished using a customized textual musical language called TinyNotation that is both easy-to-use and versatile.  For example, we can input the following text:

{{Phrase|Verse|id=4|tiny=r4.*C#m E8_It E_was- E4_n’t B8~_lost B2 e8_or d#4. r4.*B d#4_found c#4 B8~ B2 r2}}

The curly brackets and label {{Phrase|…}} indicate that we are inserting a musical phrase. Verse indicates that the phrase belongs to the verse section, and id=4 indicates that this is the fourth phrase in the verse.

The data then appears as r4.*C#m E8_It E_was- E4_n’t B8~_lost B2 e8_or d#4. r4.*B d#4_found c#4 B8~ B2 r2.  Based on Lilypond, TinyNotation can take rests r and pitches E, their duration 4., chords *C#m, and lyrics _It. Further extension allow for time signature and key changes, the insertion of metadata, and much more. Once this information is saved, the MusicWiki instantly renders this into musical notation, coloring notes by their tonal function, as shown below.

This workflow makes it possible to repeat phrases by giving them multiple id numbers and to check that pitches are correctly entered by their color. Breaking the song into small phrases helps make them easy to enter without the assistance of other software, and also helps to avoid rhythmic errors which would otherwise easily cascade. Each phrase can be downloaded in eps, pdf, and lilypond format.
